Off-Season TrainingFlexible Options

It’s no secret that off-season training is the best way to stay ahead of the competition come try-outs, but nowadays everyone does it. Everyone does their high school, junior A, or college summer training program. Everyone shoots pucks in their garage. So “putting in a little extra effort” just isn’t going to get it done. You need a program that’s ran by a professional stickhandling and shooting instructor who utilizes off-ice training with equipment you won’t find anywhere else. You need a schedule that provides accountability to show up and sessions that are ran in a format to get you more reps in a shorter amount of time than anywhere else. You need Build Your Game!

At BYG we know that players often have busy schedules in the off-season. That’s why we offer players and parents the convenience of saving time, money, and gas by fulfilling all of their needs in one place. We also ensure that players will receive quality in all aspects of their off-season training. Plus, we offer training packages in 5 and 10 week blocks for players who play other sports like baseball and football.

Choose Between Two Training Packages (or Do Both!):BYG Hockey Skills Training and Strength Training

Skills Training Package

hockeyskillshscollegeBYG’s hockey skills training is the single most unique and effective on the market. We use a combination of innovative drills and a hands-on instruction style to make a huge impact on each and every player that trains with us.

Innovation

At BYG we strive to practice all of our skills off the ice the same way that we would on the ice. Players are taught to balance themselves properly as they shoot, and to utilize a loose bottom hand as they stickhandle to allow for maximum range and efficiency. Keeping the techniques we practice consistent whether we’re off or on the ice helps improvement come much, much easier. Our goal is that by the end of the program players will have developed the ability to stay strong on their skates as they unleash an arsenal of stickhandling moves and shooting techniques to help them fool opposing players and goalies.

Hands-On Instruction
Great drills are only part of the battle. To really get the most out of their practice time, players need instructors who can keep a workout moving at a fast pace, communicate ideas and concepts effectively, and make positive, meaningful corrections to each and every players’ technique as they work their drills. This is why every instructor at Build Your Game is a qualified instructor, not just a good hockey player, and every skill session is a small-group session (8 players maximum), to ensure that each every player gets the maximum amount of attention.

Fun Games
Players always go faster and harder when they’re competing. That’s why we separate drills into “warm-ups” and “races” so that they have times to slow down and practice the technique and times to speed up and race over speed against other players. Even better than that, though, is our various “scrimmages” and “small games” that we play, which give players a chance to compete in fun and realistic hockey situations, helping them to develop their creativity and their mental side of the game as well.

Weekdays and Times

To uphold our promise of keeping a small group setting during off-ice sessions, players must choose to come on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and stick with those days throughout the summer.

The weekly schedule repeats itself throughout the 10 scheduled training weeks, except for the week of July 4th which we take off as a courtesy to families who may be traveling.  View the schedule link below.

Strength Training Package

The basis of a truly effective off-season strength training program needs to be Progressive Overload.

Progressive overload is fitness industry shorthand for “progressively overloading the muscles”. In practice, that means we actually record on paper how much resistance the players are using and how many reps they are accomplishing one week, and then we make sure that when they come back the next week they are accomplishing more. This is crucial because the human body is terrible at knowing whether it’s going 80% or 100%. To us, 80% makes our muscles burn just as much and feels just as awful! So, the tendency is for players to think that they’re going hard enough when their muscles are burning, instead of digging for those extra few reps. That’s why we track their progress; so that they know exactly how much resistance to do and how many reps they need to shoot for in order to improve by 10% each and every week. It’s also hugely motivating to be able to see exactly how far they’ve come!
